AMENRA, LIQUID ROOM, EDINBURGH, NOVEMBER 7 2025

Belgian post-metal brutalists in Edinburgh for, I believe, the very first time.

Line-up:

SIEM REAP: Research suggests that SIEM REAP is either the second largest city in Cambodia or a solo project of  WIEGEDOOD's Gilles Demolder. Common sense suggests the latter. Imagine my surprise, then, when... nah, it's Gilles. Quiet, introspective singer/songwriter stuff, competing with a steady buzz of conversation from the crowd. Someone shouts 'Haw, gonnae shut the fuck up, lads!', with very little effect. Which is a shame, because he deserves more respect.

AMENRA: Just a short, 1 hour, set from the soul-destroying Belgians. They do bleak, crushing and emotionally devastating post-metal like no-one else, other than, perhaps, Hundred Year Old Man. Also very hard to photograph.

PORTRAYAL OF GUILT, MASH HOUSE, EDINBURGH, NOVEMBER 5 2025

Following on from Sunday's photo/video fail in Glasgow, here are some noisy boys
in Edinburgh. Will there be fireworks?
This is a very last-minute outing, as I usually have to work Wednesdays and I had totally forgotten it was happening.
Before I go on, I have to make excuses for the appalling quality of the pics and videos. It is very dark in the venue, and there is a lot of smoke, It is also VERY LOUD, so the sound quality is lower than I would prefer. Indeed, the sound on the headliner's recordings is so broken that it will be unusable.

Line-up:

KAKIHARA: Local 'beatdoon' kings. We know what to expect from these lads. And we get it.

GOUT: Most excellent Glasgow sludge kids. It'll be good to see them in Edinburgh, at last. Will they play 'Newcastle'? I hope they do.
And, indeed, they do. Third time I've seen them - first time I missed it, second time they didn't play it, this time I get it!
They'll be back in town in a few weeks with CWFEN. Which is nice.

PORTRAYAL OF GUILT: On tour with DEAFHEAVEN,  Texans PoG stop off for a little side-quest in Edinburgh. Not entirely sure how to classify these lads - the internet calls them 'black metal', but I reckon it's more like some kind of filthy black sludge. Like my morning coffee. Either way, they're VERY LOUD and my mic doesn't like it, so there's no video. Which is annoying because they are very good.

MONO, ST. LUKE'S, GLASGOW, NOVEMBER 2 2025

This year's pilgrimage to see the Japanese post-rock legends, one of the very few bands I like that my wife insists on going to see, despite not really liking post-rock. I think she's got a thing for Japanese men.

Sadly, the door staff at St. Luke's won't let me in with my camera, so there will be no pics or videos of the show. Still, I'll press on and see where this goes...

Line-up:

CAHILL COSTELLO: Scottish instrumental drum/guitar duo. Kevin Cahill on guitar and Graham Costello battering the fuck out of the drums. Cahill spends a lot of time on his knees shaking his flowing locks wildly, looking totally like a large shaggy dog worrying a bone. They describe themselves as 'ambient/post-rock' but they're way too in-yer-face to be ambient and way too mathy to be post rock. Mrs. Fudlip doesn't like them, but I do. Oh yes. They're VERY far from the worst band I've seen supporting Mono(Hello, Smoke Jaguar, I'm looking at you, here)

https://www.facebook.com/cahillcostello

MONO: The aforementioned Japanese post-rock legends. And 'legends' they really are, having been devastating crowds for 25 years. Their 'OATH' alum has been out for a wee while now, since back in 2024, but this is the first chance I have to see bits of it done live.

They start with a couple of new ones- Run On and We All Shine On - neither of which present any surprises. They do what Mono songs do. The latter is, perhaps, the least adventurous song I've ever heard them play. It's still nice, though, but even the drummer looks a bit bored. The main surprise of the evening is that the two guitar botherers Taka and Yoda play STANDING UP throughout the whole show, a thing I have never seen before.

Anyway, a couple of oldies next - Innocence and Sorrow - before they bring out the big guns, and they play one of my personal favourites 'Recoil/Ignite' (video from 2014  https://youtu.be/OskQeuLuT0I). Stunning, as always.

Another new one next - Hear the Wind Sing - which features bass-lady Tamaki on piano. Maybe it's just the unfamiliarity of the new, but this is another one that doesn't really float my boat. But then everything is forgiven when they play Ashes in the Snow, EVERYBODY's favourite, which is pure glory, and they end the set with probably the best of the new ones, the very pretty Time goes By. Personally, I reckon they should have played those last two the other way round, but that's a minor quibble.

They go off for maybe two minutes, then they're back to 'encore' with the monstrous beast that is Com(?), the song that showed me, many years ago, how relentlessly brutal Mono could be. And still are. It's glorious and crushing, pounding and pummelling and one of the heaviest things you will see. St. Luke's organ pipes are illuminated in angry red, like bloody teeth behind the band, who are themselves barely visible as they flail about under flickering white lights.

Here's a video of them playing Com(?) back in 2022, last time I saw them.   https://youtu.be/T3i9ud7oTZE

I know that bands need to show off the new stuff, and that will always mean that old favourites are pushed aside to make room, but I still miss the likes of Halcyon and Yearning. Maybe the new songs will bed in and become the next favourites. Time will tell. In the meantime, Mono are, and always will be, a joy to see live. I just wish they would remember that Glasgow IS NOT the only city in Scotland.

ROBOT DEATH MONKEY, ROYAL BRITISH LEGION, DUNBAR, OCTOBER 31 2025

The 'hardest band in Scotland' bothering the locals.

Scene veterans and a handful of noisy local youth combos. It's a small town, and I guess the pool of available talent is quite shallow, so some faces crop up in several bands.

Things I learned today: Young people don't use Facebook, so I have to include Instagram links instead.

Line-up:

THE MOTLEY: The youngest band on the bill tonight. Inexperienced but enthusiastic, with a solid
'don't care' attitude and raw garage rock sound. Impressive drummer.

VIDEO:  https://youtu.be/8heAX5pUXU8      https://www.instagram.com/_the.motley_/
THORNE: 'Pure Scottish rock'. If, by 'Scottish', we mean 'grungy, Smashing Pumpkins/L7 influenced. I have it on good authority that their singer is, in the practice room, pretty solid, but she is struggling to hold it together tonight for some reason. I guess more gig experience will sort that out.

INFERNAL SLAUGHTER: It should come as no surprise that these folks play 'old school death metal', and play it pretty well. I fail to get any video of these lads, due to a combination of technical issues (mine AND theirs) and an irritating photographer who would insist on standing right in front of me every time I tried to record. Extra irritating as this is their very first gig, and it would have been nice to get a record.

HAZED: fka ATOMETAL. Neither name is particularly appropriate, to be honest, as they both imply some kind of stoner/doom sound, whereas we actually get decent standard thrash.

THE REIVERS: These'll be the 'hardcore punks' then. No, they won't really. Punky, yes. Hardcore? Not really. Chaotic? Definitely!

ROBOT DEATH MONKEY: We all know who they are, surely. Short notice addition to the bill, as the original headliners - whoever they were - pulled out. Fortunately, our favourite turbo-stoners have a long association with The Space, and were happy to step in.

HAMMER, BANSHEE LABYRINTH, EDINBURGH, DECEMBER 12 2025

HELLRAISER metal night at the Banshee , in which our headliners will play their new album in full. And, indeed, my 42nd and last gig of the...
